Apply for Professional, Nonprofessional, Competition or Touring Performance Rights

Professional or Nonprofessional Rights: Before you apply for professional or nonprofessional performance rights, check the Restrictions page to ensure that there is no conflict with your intended title, venue, and dates. Professional and nonprofessional applications with restrictions conflicts will be denied. In addition, be sure to review the Payments page to familiarize yourself with a) the Advance Payment and b) the summary Box Office Statement submission and Final Payment requirements.

Note that special clearance is often required for performances in New York City and Los Angeles and in countries other than the United States and Canada. Allow a minimum of two weeks for responses to these applications. BPPI generally licenses only English-language performance rights. Competition Rights: Applications for competition rights are not subject to restrictions. All competitions require a performance-rights license with the exception of those five minutes or under in duration. For competitions with a duration of greater than five minutes a standard fee of $50.00 per performance applies for full-length plays and $35.00 per performance for short plays.

Production Type and Payments Schedule Confirmations

Approved professional and nonprofessional performance licenses require two types of payments:

1. Advance Payment: To secure performance rights, a calculated nonrefundable Advance Payment is required. The Advance Payment may be made immediately upon application by credit card or PayPal or within 30 days if you choose to pay by bank transfer, check, or use a purchase order number. Provided no restrictions conflict exists with your application, you will be immediately emailed an invoice and a performance-rights license. Performance rights, however, are not secured, and professional restrictions do not go into effect, until the Advance Payment has been made.

2. Final Payment: A summary Box Office Statement, indicating gross box-office revenue, is required within three business days of your closing date along with a Final Payment, if any is due. The Final Payment is required to bring the total royalties to the greater of either the guaranteed advance or 10% of the gross box-office revenue. It is strongly recommended that you use our Box Office spreadsheets for your summary Box Office Statement submission, which are available for download on the Payments page. Summary Box Office Statements may also be submitted through the Payments page. Important: Note that summary Box Office Statements are required to be submitted following your closing date regardless of whether a Final Payment is due. The only exception to this requirement is if your production does not charge for admission.
