    Press Quotes

“Stephen Bittrich’s HOME OF THE GREAT PECAN is the most delightful new comedy I’ve seen in a long while … I loved spending time with these folks … At first glance, you might think that Bittrich has gathered all these larger-than-life, dizzyingly archetypal characters merely to trot them out for their own sake. And he’d certainly be giving his audience a grand time if that were all he had in mind, not to mention the delicious romp he’s providing for his more than capable cast. But there’s more here than surface: every one of the balls Bittrich is juggling at his outrageous act one curtain gets caught neatly by the finale an hour later. No loose ends, no quick saves. And there’s even a message or two to take home and savor.” —Martin Denton, nytheatre.com

“[The] script shines through, thanks to plenty of laugh lines, bizarre predicaments and wild characters.” —Valerie-Jean Hume, CV Independent

    Author(s)

    • Stephen Bittrich

Stephen Bittrich's first play was a 30-minute STAR TREK tribute in junior high school where he penned himself into the starring role of Captain Kirk. After college, he moved to New York to become an actor, but soon put his English major skills to good use writing plays during the slow acting periods. He often wrote late at night during one of his survival jobs as a graveyard shift security guard.  When his daughter was born he focused on playwriting rather than the itinerant life of the actor. For over a decade and a half he worked primarily with The Drilling Company Theater on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where many of his plays were produced.  He's found that working with a group he considers his "artistic family" has been fertile ground for developing stories. He also writes for the screen and was a Top 30 Finalist in the first Project Greenlight contest (also an HBO reality show) with his screenplay DESERT RITES, based upon his play of the same name, and more recently his screenplay HEALER was purchased by Past Present Productions. Excerpts from his writings and other interesting tidbits may be found on his website: www.StephenBittrich.com. HOME OF THE GREAT PECAN also has its own website: www.HomeoftheGreatPecan.com. Other published plays include BRAIN SUCKING (DRAMATICS MAGAZINE, 1995), DUTY HONOR COUNTRY (New York Theatre Experience, 2005), THE PROPOSAL (Smith and Kraus, 2006), HOLE (Smith and Kraus, 2011) — as well as monologues and scenes in BEST MEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES 2005, BEST WOMEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES AND SCENES 2012, and BEST MEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES AND SCENES 2012 (Smith and Kraus, 2005, 2012).

But his plans are jeopardized when his sixteen-year-old daughter, Robbie, returns home from jail, newly politicized and eager to stand on the front lines of the Movement. Act Two jumps back in time to 1959, to the last time Medgar Evers set foot in the Monroe household for Robbie's 13th birthday. Battle lines are drawn — daughter against father, husband against wife, sister against sister, and neighbor against neighbor.
