How It Feels to Fall from the Sky — Marjory
Dominic Finocchiaro
Marjory: it’s a beautiful day you’d probably think it was too chilly
but that’s just because you never did know how to dress properly
a t-shirt in december, a sweater in june
hopeless
no, it’s nice out
just a few clouds
you always liked to find the ones shaped like naughty bits
i did, too, i admit it
oh, a hot dog vendor
they don’t normally come around, this side of the park you couldn’t resist
then i’d listen to your stomach for the rest of the day like a symphony in there
and so much sauerkraut!
can’t even taste the actual
and the bun’d always be stale, the meat burnt but you’d eat it anyway
every bite
you’d devour it
before i’d even notice, before i could even
gone
all gone
…
i finally boxed up all your clothes
somebody from the salvation army came and picked them up
nice of them, to do that
still some kindness in the world
saved your coat, your corduroy
like the smell
smells like your hair, when you didn’t wash it for a while
and i like the feel of the ridges, between my fingers sometimes i just sit there on the couch and rub my hand along it
back and forth
back and forth
looking out the windows
at the pigeons staring in at me
they get so high
it really must be something, to just be able to soar like that
everybody hates pigeons
you always did
but anything that can fly
anything that can glide like that
is worth something
if you were here, you’d tell me to stop my yammering and just
enjoy the silence
enjoy this beautiful day
here
with you
but you’re not here
so i guess i can keep talking
guess i can keep going until my throat’s dry until my voice goes hoarse
until there’s no sound left at all
i can keep going, even after that
even in the silence, i’ll keep working at it until you come back
until you finally come back
until my silent words return you to me
and you kiss me once more
and shut my mouth for good
then i’ll stop
i swear it
then i’ll never speak again
