    Press Quotes

“A spirit of cheerfully assertive militancy tempered with humor and musical savvy. A brisk multi-styled score.” —Stephen Holder, New York Times

“Funny! Lively! Weinberg is a gifted lyricist and melodist. This is a gay old time!” —Howard Kissell, New York Daily News

“After stagings around the US., this glimpse of gay life in lilting songs and wry, affecting lyrics arrives Off-Broadway.” —William Henry III, Time magazine

“TEN PERCENT REVUE is 100% entertainment! This is an exhilarating evening with the warm heart of an old-time hoofer and the big city brains of a Talking Head. I can’t imagine anyone, gay or straight, who loves musical theater, seeing this show and not feeling terrific all the way home.” —Dan Geringer, Philadelphia Gay News

“‘TEN’: A gay hurray! An upbeat celebration of the gay lifestyle which tweaks its stereotypes and acknowledges its serious concerns. The clever and musically inventive songs have something to say to people beyond its 10% target audience.” —Joe Brown, Washington Post

“A funny, riveting show for gays and straights! TEN PERCENT REVUE is an enlightened mixture of painful truths, renegade rhymes and hilariously creative spoofs. The messages are universal.” —Susan Wilson, Boston Globe

“Jubilant in its affirmation of gay and lesbian love, life, and culture! Bright, original and joyously gay entertainment.” —Bill Kreidler, The Advocate

“One of Boston’s Ten Best Shows of the Year. Refreshingly clear-headed and wide ranging, composer/lyricist Weinberg knows how to laugh at human follies, how to think and how to reach the heart.” —Arthur Friedman, Boston Herald

    • Tom Wilson Weinberg

Tom Wilson Weinberg began singing original queer-themed songs in coffee-houses and gay pride events in the late seventies. His early albums "Gay Name Game" (1979) and "All-American Boy" (1982) were among the first in this new genre. His shows TEN PERCENT REVUE (1987) and GET USED TO IT! (1992) were produced Off-Broadway by Laura Green and John Glines, respectively, published by Broadway Play Publishing, toured extensively and recorded by Aboveground Records. Weinberg's compilation "Don't Mess with Mary" (1994) was the official CD of Stonewall 25. SIXTY YEARS WITH BRUHS AND GEAN, commissioned by the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, debuted at Carnegie Hall in 1995 and was later sung at Lincoln Center. An expanded version, BRUHS AND GEAN, was presented by the Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Theater Festival in 2003, at The Duplex in New York and at Arts Project Cherry Grove, Fire Island in 2004. Tom's THE TEACHINGS OF CHAIRMAN RICK was part of the 2005 Philly Fringe Festival. RICK was revived in 2006, BRUHS AND GEAN in 2007. In 2008 Tom began a series of cabaret performances which benefit community organizations and are ongoing. He is continuing development of his musical about Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok, original book by Peggy Stafford and directed by Darren Katz. A reading and demo CD of ELEANOR & HICK features Lea Delaria, Cady Huffman and Mary Testa. Weinberg's song "Lesbian Seagull" was featured in the film Beavis and Butt-head Do America (Paramount/MTV), on the soundtrack (Geffen/Universal), and published by Warner Chappell. Honors include a Drama-Logue Award (Los Angeles), Golden Gull Award (Provincetown), Bessie Smith Award (Boston) and OutMusic Heritage Award (New York). Tom was a founder of Giovanni's Room and president of The Attic Youth Center, both in Philadelphia, where he lives with his husband, John Whyte. Tom and John are the dads of Jesse, 23, and Max, 21. Tom is a member of ASCAP, OutMusic and The Purple Circuit.
