Description

Four youths are catapulted into whimsical chaos by a strange, contagious, otherworldly speck of light. A mystical, energetic comedy that asks us to look into our assumptions about adulthood, career, and education as we reflect on the need to take action, before falling prey to the existential blackness inhibiting our contemporary world. A genre-bending, mostly romantic comedy.

Press Quotes

“A word of warning — you’ll want to be sharp and alert when you attend ADAPTIVE RADIATION. One joy of this production is that there is a boatload of subtle drama and humor, both in dialog and in action. Don’t blink — you won’t want to miss a thing.” —Alan Sherrod, Arts Knoxville

“The show’s metaphysical elements are refreshingly unconcerned with their own mechanics and, instead, earnestly exhort viewers to take an active role in interpreting the play’s none-too-obvious position on self-actualization and modern existential dread. For 90 enchanted minutes, the story blurs the line between magic and reality just enough for viewers to ask whether the literal “radiation” wreaking havoc on the characters’ world might also exist, figuratively, in themselves as a wonderful and terrifying potential to let a little wonder into their own lives.” —Nicole Hitner, Chronogram

About the Author

Author

  • Hannah Benitez

Hannah Benitez is a screenwriter, playwright, and fiction writer, who got her start as an actor/musician in over 20 AEA productions, including the original casts of HERE THERE ARE BLUEBERRIES by Moisés Kaufman/Tectonic Theater Project and WHITE FANG by Jethro Compton/freeFall Theatre. Her produced plays include ADAPTIVE RADIATION, ASHE IN JOHANNESBURG, DIKE, GRINGOLANDIA, and FOR CLOSURE! SAINT BRIGID, the sequel play to DIKE, which was selected for Rattlestick Theater's inaugural Pride Play's festival in NY, NY. DIKE was originally developed for The New York Theatre Workshop's 2050 Fellow Tatiana Pandiani culminating project — these two plays about religion and female queerness can be done in rep or standalone. Benitez made the Kilroy's List with her bilingual play, GRINGOLANDIA. She is a finalist for American Shakespeare Center's Shakespeare's New Contemporaries Prize with her comedic adaptation of Henry 6 titled THE 6TH, OR, THE PATRIOTS. She was most in the writers' room for the new limited series La Joconde, directed by Jodie Foster, which you'll see at some point streaming. She also adapted one of her original plays with Universal Television, sold it to the studio, and wrote the pilot for NBC. She was featured in American Theatre Magazine 6 Theatre Workers You Should Know.
