Description

It’s 1999, and Mara and Ruth Glass are teenagers, a drama kid and a punk trapped inside the bedroom where their mother attempted suicide earlier that evening. Over the course of the play, the girls piece together the insidious motivators that have driven their mother toward suicide. Soon, the portrait of a woman destroyed by society, misogyny, Hollywood, men, and diet culture emerges. This was a woman who was determined to shape her daughters in her own twisted image. But the girls unravel it all — by turns playacting, mimicking, obfuscating, blaming, physically and verbally sparring. As they anticipate the phone call with the news of their mother’s fate, the bedroom itself becomes anatomized into a micro-America, and from it they predict the dark world approaching on “the other side of the century.”
